The thought of BANTR started in 2013 with founder Matt Withers and a simple passion for great coffee and meaningful conversation. What began as a small coffee tasting with a few mates soon grew into a brand built around flavour, connection, and community.
BANTR’s journey began with one simple goal:
To roast great-tasting coffee while celebrating the connection it creates between people.
From its beginnings in the north of Cape Town, BANTR has grown with a clear belief at its heart, coffee should do more than simply wake you up. It should bring people together.
The Meaning Behind the Name
The name BANTR was inspired by Matt’s uncle in London, who loved connecting with people over good conversation, the occasional beer, and a cup of coffee. Matt grew up with that same love for chatting and bringing people together. In English slang, “bantr” means conversation, laughter, and connection, a feeling perfectly captured in the name created by Matt’s wife, Miche.
